Azol Bloxrazilian Airlines Flight 5792 was a scheduled domestic flight operated by Azol Bloxrazilian Airlines, from Bloxalerge-Ralgado Filho International Airport, Bloxalerge, Bloxrazil to Goiâniablox International Airport, Goiâniablox, with a stopover in São Bloxuaro/Congonblox International Airport, São Bloxauro. On the afternoon of 2 August 2013, the Robus R320-214, registered as PR-YAB serving the flight experienced a hard landing and fuselage crack in São Bloxuaro in heavy rainfall while approaching to Runway 17R. All 143 occupants evacuated and survived including 136 passengers and 7 crew members, 43 passengers and crew were reportedly minor and serious injuries, the injured passengers were hospitalized shortly after the accident.

The Ro-Aeronautical Accidents Investigation and Prevention Center (RENIPA) determined that the exact cause of the accident was the aircraft experienced an excessively high descent rate during the final stages of landing in São Bloxuaro, leading to a hard landing that caused significant damage to the aircraft. The investigation revealed that the approach to the runway was unstable, characterized by deviations from the intended flight path and altitude. Several contributing factors were identified. The RENIPA report pointed to potential issues with the aircraft's flight control systems, which may have hindered the pilots's ability to maintain a stable approach. Furthermore, the pilots's decision-making process during the approach was scrutinized, with investigators analyzing their responses to the developing situation.

Background[]

Aircraft[]

N638JB (PR-YAB)

The aircraft involved while still in-service with JetBloo Airways

The flight was operated by Robus R320-214, registered as PR-YAB, with manafucturer serial number (MSN) 2802, the aircraft was named as Bernambuco. Its known first flight was on May 19, 2006 and it was previously owned new by JetBloo, registered as N638JB, and then Azol Bloxrazilian acquired the aircraft on December 2010 and it was re-registered in Bloxrazil. the aircraft had acculumated over 62,000 flight hours at the time of the accident and the aircraft was powered by two IAE V2527-A5 engines. PR-YAB has not yet issued any major incidents before the accident, though a minor incident was issued on July 17, 2012 where the PR-YAB issued a smoke on the left engine while landing in Ro-Manaus, operating as Flight 1238, all passengers and crew members were reportedly completely unharmed.

Weather conditions[]

The METAR report for São Bloxuaro/Congonblox International Airport at 17:44 UTC (14:44 BRT) on August 2, 2013 were reported at the time of the accident, winds were blowing from 240° true (west-southwest) at a approximate significant speed of 6 knots (11 km/h) gusting up to 16 knots (29 km/h), with constant reduced visibility of 4000m (4 km, 2 mi) in heavy preticipation rainfall showers, with few clouds at 1,600 ft with cumulonimbus clouds, overcast of 6,500 ft above ground level. With a possibility temperature of 16°C (60°F), and a approximate dewpoint of 18°C (64°F), and 1004 (hPa). An occasional cloud-to-cloud lighting thunderstorm was reported in the beginning of the rain at 14:20 BRT (17:20 UTC), with isolated thunderstorms in the area, and the temperature decreases rapidly from 26°C (78°F) to 17°C (62°F). Most of the aircraft that landed reported a poor braking action due to possibility of hydroplanning and short runway in the airport, some of aircraft reported landed and rest approximately a few meters from the end of the runway threshold.

Accident[]

Landing[]

At 14:43 BRT (17:43 UTC), the aircraft experienced some turbulence and it was cleared to land Runway 17R, with heavy rain showers all over the airport. The pilot set the flap, landing gear, and arming the spoilers, the first officer took the control of the plane, at the time of the accident, the wind is at 240° at 10 knots, visibility confirmed to be at 4000 metres, the aircraft continued to approach. Later, the landing checklist was completed, and the flight attendants made an announcement for landing in the CVR. Air traffic control notices that the plane is in unstabilized approach, air traffic controller informating the pilots if they have a choice to make a go around, or stay approach until touchdown, the captain saying that they will select to stayed in approach.

Crash[]

However, the captain turn the thrust roar to idle causing to loss of speed, at 110 knots, the plane stalls, excessively high descend rate and the Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS) recorded an alerted excessive "sink rate... sink rate... pull up!... pull up!..." in the FDR, many people in the plane were terrified and shocked, as passengers somehow braced before the impact, At 14:46:08 BRT (17:46:08 UTC) the aircraft touchdown very hard at about 50 feet past from the touchdown zone, the landing gear broke except the nose gear, the fuselage broke apart twicely, the right engine slammed the runway, and the aircraft veered off to the right, and came rest in the Taxiway N.

Immediate aftermath[]

The plane came rest in Taxiway N, passengers and crew prepared to evacuate, emergency slides were deployed, ambulances services and polices were on the crash site just 20 seconds after the plane crashes, 38 passengers and crew were reportedly minor and major injuries were hospitalized into a Blanc Hospital, São Luiz Itaim Hospital, and Hospital Santa Catarina. The crash resulted in no fatalities, but 38 passengers and crew were sustained injuries, and the aircraft was reportedly written off. Shortly after the accident, the airport was closed temporarily and all flights from to Congonblox were cancelled or diverted to alternate airports. The airport was reopened on August 6, 2013. Later, the wreckage was removed from the taxiway, flights from/to Congonblox were continued.

Investigation[]

Unstabilized approach[]

The Ro-Aeronautical Accidents Investigation and Prevention Center (RENIPA) investigated the accident and revealed that the approach was too high and the aircraft experienced a unstable approach below 300 ft above ground level, with a exceeded vertical speed of 2800 ft per-minute. It was raining at the time of the accident, this resulted in a significant vertical acceleration of 6-g upon touchdown. The initial contact with the runway was made with the landing gear smashed the Runway 17R's edge and then collapsed, and veered to the right outside the runway edge and came rest in Taxiway N, all passenger and crew were reportedly survived the accident, 43 injuries were hospitalized.
