Lufthansa Flight 653 was a scheduled international passenger flight from Ro-Frankfurt International Airport, Ro-Frankfurt, Romarkia to O.R Tamblox International Airport, Ro-Johannesburg, South Bloxveld.

On 27 May 2014, the Roeing 747-830 (registered D-ABYH), while cruising over South Sudblox, the aircraft experiencing a fuel leak, which conducted an fuel exhaustion due to overpressure and improper maintenance. The captain, Kurt Alois (43) and the first officer, Abelardo Diethelm (37) glided the plane into a successful emergency landing at Bladis Roeba‌ International Airport in Bladis Roeba, Great Ethiopia. All 327 occupants survived the incident, although 16 robloxians were sustained injuries.

The Great Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (GECAA) determined that the accident was caused by fuel exhaustion resulting from a significant fuel leak in the third engine, which had developed due to overpressure in the fuel line system. The overpressure was traced to improper maintenance procedures that failed to detect and rectify a faulty pressure regulating valve during routine inspections. Contributing factors included poor oversight of maintenance operations and insufficient crew awareness of the severity of the fuel leak during the early stages of the flight before the incident.

Incident[]

A transcript that was recorded during its emergency landing released by the GECAA

The flight departed from Ro-Frankfurt in Romarkia at 22:15 CEST (20:15 UTC) on 26 May 2014, as an part of an overnight long-haul service to Ro-Johannesburg in South Bloxveld, it was scheduled to arrived at 08:55 SAST (06:55 UTC). At the cockpit, captain Kurt Alois (43) and the first officer, Abelardo Diethelm (37) were flying the plane. The flight departed without incident, climbing and reaching its cruising altitude of 38,000 ft at 22:27 CEST (20:27 UTC). The flight continued normally over southern Eurobloxia, Mediterranean Sea, and some of eastern Bloxveld parts.

At 02:04 EAT (23:04 UTC), almost four hours into the flight, the aircraft began leaking fuel through a fractured fuel line leading to the number third (No. 3) engine. The leak was initially undetected by the flight crew and maintenance systems due to a faulty sensor. At 02:29 EAT (23:29 UTC), 25 minutes later, the flight crew observed abnormally low oil temperature and unusually high oil pressure readings in the third number engine.

At 03:12 EAT (00:12 UTC), at approximately five hours into the flight, while cruising over South Sudblox, the flight crew detected abnormal fuel readings. A subsequent inspection indicated a fuel leak from the aircraft’s third number engine.

After consulting with Lifthansa’s operations center and assessing the situation, the crew declared a fuel emergency and initiated a diversion to Bladis Roeba‌ International Airport, the nearest major airport capable of accommodating a Roeing 747-8. Weather conditions at Bladis Roeba were reported as marginal, with moderate winds and occasional turbulence in the approach sector.
